Certificate of custody
A certificate confirming present registration of a child‘s custody. The certificate states the child‘s name, ID number and the custodian‘s/custodians‘ ID number.

Order process
Certificate of custody is ordered electronically on the Registers Iceland website. The person ordering the certificate must log in to the order form with digital certificates of IceKey. Please note that you must enter the child's social security number for which the certificate is issued.
You have to choose the number of certificates, the language of the certificate and finally the delivery method.
There are three delivery methods:
- Electronic certificate in mailbox at Ísland.is - the fastest and best option.
- Sent home by letter mail - sent to the certificate holder's legal address.
- Pick up the certificate at the register desk at Borgartún 21 - open from 10-15.
Once the payment and order has been received by Registers Iceland, it will be processed and the processing time for certificates is up to 2 working days.
Note that the certificate is only prepared if all data is available.
When the certificate is ready, an SMS is sent to the person who ordered and the certificate is delivered in the manner requested in the order.
Disclaimer
Registers Iceland only issues a certificate of custody when documents confirming the custody arrangement are available. For example we can not issue the certificate when children have been registered or have been born overseas. Registers Iceland can not confirm anything regarding decisions on custody made in other countries.
Registers Iceland now issues electronic certificates that are available in individuals’ postbox on Ísland.is. Electronic certificates are fully equivalent to paper certificates and are easy to forward as needed. The electronic certificates have an electronic signature from Registers Iceland that is very secure and trackable.
When processed the electronic certificate will be available in the postbox of the person named in the certificate. The exception being when parents or legal guardians order certificates for children or when death certificates are ordered. In those cases the certificate will be available in the postbox of the person who ordered the certificate.
