End of cohabitation

If persons who are registered as cohabiting in the National Registry move to different legal domiciles by notifying a change of address, the cohabitation ends automatically. However, if these persons have one or more children, they are obliged to determine the custody of the child or children before the end of cohabitation and change of legal domicile. The parties must contact a district commissioner to arrange an agreement on the custody and legal domicile of the child or children. The district commissioner sends a confirmed agreement to Registers Iceland to record the end of cohabitation, change the legal domicile if necessary and record the decision on the custody of the child or children.
