I am supported by a family member
The application processing time can be up to five working days after all necessary documents have been submitted.
Marital spouse
A person is married to an EEA/EFTA citizen with a legal domicile in Iceland and supported by the spouse.
An application is not processed until all documentation has been received and the applicant has arrived at a registration office and presented passport and other necessary documentation.
Form that needs to be submitted electronically:
- A-271: Application for registration in the national registry for period exceeding six months. The applicant must fill out the form and state their own email address where the registration certificate will be sent via email after registration has been completed.
- Following documents must be submitted together with the application:
- A copy/photo of a passport or legal travel document with at least 6 months remaining of its term of validity.
- Marriage certificate.
- Documents showing that the spouse can support the applicant. See minimum subsistence.
- Confirmation of health insurance. Travel insurance is not sufficient.
- Note that if a spouse was registered in Iceland on the basis of being an employee or employer, the applicant is not required to show confirmation of health insurance.
- It is optional to submit the following documents together with the application:
- Birth certificate.
Upon arrival in Iceland, the applicant must go to a registration office and present the original copies of the following documents:
- A passport or legal travel document with at least 6 months remaining of its term of validity.
- Marriage certificate.
- Birth certificate if it was submitted in the application process.
Cohabiting spouse
An unmarried person who has cohabited with an EEA/EFTA citizen who is unmarried and has a legal domicile in Iceland and is supported by the cohabiting spouse.
An application is not processed until all documentation has been received and the applicant has arrived at a registration office and presented passport and other necessary documentation.
Forms that needs to be submitted electronically:
- A-271: Application for registration in the national registry for period exceeding six months. The applicant must fill out the form and state their own email address where the registration certificate will be sent via email after registration has been completed.
- Following documents must be submitted together with the application:
- A copy/photo of a passport or legal travel document with at least 6 months remaining of its term of validity.
- Certificate of marital status, for both individuals.
- Statement from cohabiting spouse confirming willingness to support the applicant.
- Documents confirming the ability of the cohabiting spouse to provide means of support. See minimum subsistence.
- Documents showing cohabitation or joint domicile in the previous country of domicile.
- Confirmation of health insurance. Travel insurance is not sufficient.
- Note that if a spouse was registered in Iceland on the basis of being an employee or employer, the applicant is not required to show confirmation of health insurance.
- It is optional to submit the following documents together with the application:
- Birth certificate.

Children 17 or younger
One, or both, parents (custodians) must be domiciled in Iceland (or have a pending application), before the child can be registered.
An application is not processed until all documentation has been received and the applicant has arrived at a registration office (note that the child has to go to the registration office together with parent/parents) and presented passport and other necessary documentation.

- Following documents must be submitted together with the application:

- Copy of parents’ passport or a legal travel document.
- If the child will reside with both parents then the following documents also need to be submitted:
- If the parents are married, their marriage certificate is required, if it has not been submitted before.
- If parents are not listed as married or in registered cohabitation in the population registry, it is necessary to submit documents stating the child's custody arrangements.
- If parents are neither married nor registered in cohabitation but are registered at the same domicile, a confirmation about which parent the child should be connected to in the population registry is needed.
- If the child will reside with only one parent it is necessary to submit documents stating the child's custody arrangements. If the parents have joint custody, the approval of the parent that does not move to Iceland is required.

Children 18 and older
An applicant that is over 18 years old and will be supported by one, or both, parents that are domiciled in Iceland (or have a pending application). The parents must be registered with a domicile in Iceland before the applicant can be registered.

Other relatives
A person who is related to an EEA/EFTA citizen with a legal domicile in Iceland and who will be supported by the relative. The relation must be by lineal consanguinity, e.g. parent, grandparent or grandchild.
An application is not processed until all documentation has been received and the applicant has arrived at a registration office and presented passport and other necessary documentation.
Forms that needs to be submitted electronically:
- A-271: Application for registration in the national registry for period exceeding six months. The applicant must fill out the form and state their own email address where the registration certificate will be sent via email after registration has been completed.
- Following documents must be submitted together with the application:
- A copy/photo of a passport or legal travel document with at least 6 months remaining of its term of validity.
- Certificate (one or more) confirming family relationship.
- Statement from relative confirming willingness to support the applicant.
- Documents confirming the ability of the relative to provide means of support.
- Confirmation of health insurance. Travel insurance is not sufficient.

- Marital status certificate. Applicants are encouraged to submit their marital status certificate because marital status may affect individuals’ various rights, and their children (if relevant).
