Name on ID cards
ID card must be issued with the applicant's full name, cf. Article 1 Act on personal names no. 45/1996 and is divided into first and last names.
According to international rules and standards, there are 30 character spaces in the computer readable stripe of ID cards. The Icelandic letters þ, æ and ö take two letter spaces. (Þ = TH, Æ = AE, Ö = OE). If a full name is longer than 30 characters, not all names appear in the computer-readable strip. However, the first given name must always be written out in full.
