The validity of passports is ten years from the date of application, but five years for children under 18 years of age.
If an old passport is lost / stolen, a new passport shall have the same validity period as the previous passport that is reported lost according to the second paragraph. Article 6 Act on Passports.
With the authority in Article 18. of the Regulation on Icelandic passports, those who have lost their passports twice or more often may expect their passports to be determined for 2 years or less while the lost passports are valid.
Requirements of foreign governments
Note that the National Registry does not have information on what requirements are made for the validity of passports in each country.
The general rule is
Most countries within the EEA and Schengen require travel documents (passports and identity cards) to be valid for at least 3 months longer than the planned stay in the country.
Many countries outside the EEA require that travel documents be valid for at least 6 months longer than the intended stay in the country, and in rare cases an even longer period of validity may be required.
It is important to find out what the requirements are in the countries you are visiting.
