About the passport

A passport must be issued under the full name of the applicant, cf. Article 1 of Act No. 45/1996 on Personal Names. According to international rules and standards, names in passports contain 38 characters. The Icelandic letters þ, æ and ö comprise two characters each. If a full name exceeds 38 characters, the given name(s) and/or middle name shall be abbreviated. However, the first given name in a passport must always be written out in full.

Fingerprints

The microchip in Icelandic passports issued after 28 June 2009 contain fingerprints. Children under the age of 12 are exempt from providing fingerprints. If it not possible to take fingerprints from the index finger of those over the age of 12, other fingers may be used. If no fingerprint can be used, a temporary passport of up to 12 months may be issued.
When applicants are fingerprinted, their rights must be safeguarded in accordance with the basic rules of the European Human Rights Convention and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, so that they maintain their dignity despite difficulties arising in the process.
Fingerprints in passports are protected according to international rules and standards so that they can only be used as comparison with fingerprints taken from the passport holder during border controls and to make sure that the passport is genuine.
