Application process for children

The application process differs depending on whether the child is younger than 13 or from the age of 13-18 years.

Children under 13 years old

  • Guardians need to fill out application V-951 and take it with them to the application place

Guardians must attend with the child when applying for an ID card as a travel document.

If one of the guardians cannot accompany the child to the application place, he must fill out a form V-951 in the presence of two witnesses who also write their name on the document. The other guardian takes it with him to the place of application.

You must always present a valid ID (passport, Icelandic driver's license or identity card) at the application place.

Guardians can authorize 3rd parties to apply for an ID card as a travel document on their behalf. Then fill in form V-951 together with accompanying document.

If the guardian has sole custody of a child, his signature is sufficient for the application and the National Registry confirms that the person has sole custody.

Note. in some cases, it is necessary to call for custody documents from abroad if children are or have been living abroad before an ID card can be issued as a travel document.

  • When applying for an ID card that is not a travel document, it is enough for one guardian to sign consent for its issuance.

The guardian must attend with the child when applying for an ID card that is not a travel document.
