Security of Icelandic ID cards
Iceland has started to issue ID cards according to the provisions of regulation (EU) 2019/1157.
This is the first travel document in the world issued in portrait format according to a new ICAO specification for TD1 documents.
The document contains two barcodes according to the new ICAO Datastructure for Barcode (IDB).
A small barcode on the front side contains the CAN. On the back side there is a larger barcode. This barcode contains digitally signed visible information from the card, more specifically a tiny facial image, MRZ and full name using Icelandic letters.
The travel document ID-card is issued as ICAO travel document type "ID", legally valid for use within the European Economic Area. Another version is also issued as ICAO document type "II" for domestic use only and is not a travel document.
